Finding a Village

👯‍♀️ 👯‍♀️ You’re kidding yourself if you choose to go alone.

This TBD is in partnership with RETHINK. I’ve been teaching and leading group coaching sessions at RETHINK since the beginning of my coaching work — close to four years now. Today’s newsletter includes why the group is important and how you benefit from a group of your peers. Interested? Join us.

If I could give one piece of advice to anyone out there struggling with anything, it would be to find your village. Find your people. Find a group. Find others with the same problem or who have been through similar problems.

While we may be afraid of rejection, it’s more likely you’ll be welcomed warmly when you seek support.

This is an amazing shortcut in life extraordinarily underutilized in a world that glorifies the individual (think: handful of billionaires) and under-recognizes the absolute village of interconnectedness that gets any of us through each day. We’re absolutely dependent on the efforts and support of many, many others.

So when we have a problem, why not find the support of folks in our world?

For four years, I’ve been teaching and coaching with RETHINK. I’m currently coaching a community of design and design-minded folks that support each other, ask questions, learn together and share their own hard earned wisdom generously. Folks come to our monthly meetings with questions ranging from the tactical to the deeply personal in search of better ways to manage professional life and create growth and opportunity for themselves.

RETHINK group work is deeply satisfying because many humans have similar struggles, insecurity, unknowns and concerns. Hearing that you aren’t alone is usually partial remedy in itself. And then hearing how others have approached your problem can open up new ideas and help you get to a solution much faster than experimenting alone.

AND in this coaching village, you’re connected with folks across the industry which also comes in handy. Frequently our professional networks could use a bit of a glow up after we’re heads down at work in a bubble. With the changing tech environment, connecting with folks becomes more and more important.

So why do we hesitate?

• Concerns we won’t address relevant topics?
Members put in the topics they want to address before each call.

• Fear that others won’t be relatable?
I’ve seen month after month that the opposite is true. The wisdom shared in the group is invaluable and comes from multiple perspectives that aren’t drinking the KoolAid in your specific bubble.

• Concerns about privacy?
We establish a safe, confidential space for discussion and unpacking questions.
